It's difficult to leave the Yuletide spirit on a trip to Iceland throughout the holidays - a vacation to Reykjavik will be packed with an awesome amount of Holiday merry-making. The city goes crazy for a great Christmas occasion, and starts ringing in the season in the beginning of December, with the lighting of the town's Christmas tree at Austurvöllur square. The party consists of choirs singing carols and the arrival of the 1st of the "Holiday Lads," 13 Santas who perform around town during the course of Lent.
Other favorite holiday sights feature the Xmas Village in Hafnarfjörður town, a tiny, joyful town chockfull of businesses offering vacation presents and traditional foods in the middle of live entertainment, and a visit to Reykjavik's major Christmas Market in Ingólfstorg Square, which fills with suppliers offering holiday season gifts, mulled wine and performances from a variety of artists.
Lastly, to experience an old-fashioned, Nordic Xmas, head to the Christmas exhibition at the Reykjavik City Museum, where exhibits demonstrate how fried bread is crafted, tallow is used to make candle lights, and guests can get to know traditional Yuletide songs and dances.
